Déjà Vu (in Danish)
Vejen - 7th July
We made an early start for Denmark today knowing it was going to be a long drive out of Sweden, through two of Denmark’s main islands and over two expensive bridges. Adding to our driving ordeal was the traffic as it is school holidays in Scandinavian; there were a lot of people going somewhere in a hurry. However given the 130 kmph speed limit we never saw any accidents, and when the traffic did slow down it was normally for a caravan on the side of the road that had wheel issues [ED: Or lack-of-wheel issues].
Before leaving Sweden we filled the car up on cheap petrol and cashed in our cans and bottles as they are not normally transferrable between countries. We stopped in Ringsted, Denmark for a morning tea break, there were no bakeries open on a Sunday which was fortunate for us because the most frequented place in Ringsted besides the church was the chemist, the Covid distancing queue was well out the door.
We stopped for lunch in Nyborg, where we stayed on the 10th and 11th of May; a lot had changed since we were there last. They had taken the renovation scaffoldings away from around the castle and set up a whole medieval village for their three day medieval festival. We arrived just in time to see the jousting horses depart, right on time for the sun shower and in plenty of time for the traditional sausage and bun with French mustard. The whole town gets behind the event; there were plenty of stalls, people in period costume and medieval events.
Tonight we are staying on a rural property just out of Vejen, nice large country mansion; however we are in the back of the garage. Scandinavian innovations; if you have a room at the back of your garage or in your basement turn it into an AirBnB, but take the photos so it looks palatial.
As our trip nears an end today’s ABBA tribute is ‘Slipping through my fingers’ (1981), for all the things that we had planned to do but for some reason or another but just didn’t get around to…
What happened to the wonderful adventures
The places I had planned for us to go?
(Slipping through my fingers all the time)
Well, some of that we did, but most we didn’t
And why, I just don’t know
