Malmo In Photos

Malmo - 5th July

Malmo is the third largest city in Sweden and is just over the bridge from Denmark. Because of its coastal proximity to European markets it was once a thriving industrial city. However a lot of the industry moved elsewhere, resulting in high unemployment, and causing other negative flow on effects such as two of its urban areas having the highest crime rates in Sweden. There is still some industry and the city is improving its image; its past industrial background has left its mark in the form of numerous large apartment blocks built for the workers in the 1960s.
Malmo serves as a primary entry point for migrants; nearly 50% of the residents have a foreign background, and the city has the largest Muslim population in Sweden and Western Europe.

Enough about the city’s industrial past, below are some photos of our self guided walking tour of the old town, some gardens, the varied architecture, and random things that amuse us.

Today’s ABBA tribute is ‘Don’t shut me down’ (2021) for the little guy (right) who was left all alone on a park bench.

A while ago, I heard the sound of children’s laughter
Now it’s quiet, so I guess they left the park
This wooden bench is getting harder by the hour
The sun is going down, it’s getting dark
I realise I’m cold, the rain begins to pour
